Umbraco upgrades and migrations

If you're still on Umbraco 7, 8 or 13, your site is exposed. Umbraco 7 and 8 no longer get security updates. Umbraco 13 will reach End-of-Life on 14 December 2026, along with .NET 8. The longer you wait, the more complex and expensive the upgrade becomes.

You need to upgrade, but your team is already stretched. I step in as your Product Owner, lead the move to Umbraco 17 on .NET 10, and work directly with your build partners. Every technical decision is made to protect your content, control costs and keep the project on track.

Case studies

I have directed more than 250 Umbraco platforms as MD of Growcreate for clients across the UK and Europe.

Umbraco website for FE fundinfo, backed by SLA support and maintenance

Technical debt had stalled FE fundinfo's progress, and template and CMS issues undermined content consistency for large editorial teams. Growcreate rebuilt the solution on Umbraco 13, delivering a clean, easy-to-use digital experience. Then they handed the site over to their ISO 27001-certified 24/7 support team for round-the-clock incident response, patching and monitoring, uptime up to 99.95% and critical-issue acknowledgement within 15 minutes. Keeping the site stable, secure and continuously improving.

Umbraco platform recovery and modernisation for a global professional services consultancy

Growcreate stabilised and modernised a global professional services and programme management consultancy's legacy Umbraco implementation. Refactoring components incrementally while the live site kept publishing. The result was predictable, low-risk change and faster delivery of enhancements. A strong example of ongoing support and modernisation that avoided the cost and disruption of a full rebuild.

Migration planning and governance

As your Product Owner, I help you make the decisions that determine whether your migration succeeds. Engineers handle the technical execution, and I make sure your migration is pointed at the right target and held to the plan.

Setting the target and the route

I decide whether you move straight to Umbraco 17 or take an intermediate step. I define what "done" means at each stage and keep the engineering team focused on it.

Signing off what "nothing lost" means

I set out what "nothing lost" means for your content and media. We agree which assets matter most, what a proper pre-launch check involves, and I sign it off before go-live.

Deciding what's worth keeping

If a package won't make it through the upgrade, that's as much a business decision as well as a technical one. We decide together whether to replace it, rebuild it or retire it. That decision goes in the risk register before any code changes.

Setting the risk tolerance for go-live

I set a window that works for your business, whether that's overnight, over a weekend or phased.

Owning the handover to support

Once you're live on Umbraco 17, I make sure the migration doesn’t just end in a closed project. Ongoing SLA-backed Support picks up with a runbook I have already defined.

If you're planning a CMS migration or stuck mid-project with an agency, I make sure the move delivers real value.

Upgrading your Umbraco site shouldn’t mean pausing your everyday priorities.

Upgrading to Umbraco 17 takes time, technical direction and hands-on oversight. Most teams don't have these resources spare. I lead the migration as your Product Owner, keep agency partners aligned, and make sure your staff can stay focused on their real work.
